Synopsis

My disease is as rare as it is famous. Basically, I’m allergic to the world. I don’t leave my house, have not left my house in seventeen years. The only people I ever see are my mom and my nurse, Carla.

But then one day, a moving truck arrives next door. I look out my window, and I see him. He’s tall, lean and wearing all black—black T-shirt, black jeans, black sneakers, and a black knit cap that covers his hair completely. He catches me looking and stares at me. I stare right back. His name is Olly.

Maybe we can’t predict the future, but we can predict some things. For example, I am certainly going to fall in love with Olly. It’s almost certainly going to be a disaster.

Favorites
I definitely did really enjoy the writing style. It was simple, but engaging. The narrator’s voice was very… easy to follow? I’m not sure how to describe it, but the story was told in a way that made it very easy to read. I found that the plot was very unique as well. Although the story does somewhat center around the disease that the character has, I felt like it was well balanced to the point where I didn’t feel like the sickness consumed the entire book. Also, I felt like the drawings/doodles were a unique component that enriched the reading experience.

Not-so-faves
I felt like the besides the main characters, there was not information on the “side” characters — physical descriptions, etc. This made it a little hard to imagine those characters.

Final Thoughts
I definitely enjoyed this read. It was a very light and fast read. It’s definitely helping with my reading slump. I think Madeline and Olly are such cute characters. I loved the engagement between these two characters. This book is definitely a “feel good” book. I was left with a HUGE smile after reading this book. PLUS, Madeline loves to read. I love to read, hello? What’s not to like about her. I adored her so much throughout reading this book. I found that Yoon also played in themes of friendship, family, and love very well throughout the book. It was well balanced, so I didn’t feel like any one factor/theme overwhelmed the book. I definitely commend Nicola Yoon for this amazing debut novel! Also, it left me wanting more — not in a bad way, but more like I liked them so much, I want more Madeline & Olly.

I definitely do recommend this book if you haven’t yet! It was quite an enjoyable read, and definitely has a twist that even I didn’t see coming.
