Plot Summary

Celeana is Adarlan’s greatest assassin until she is captured and locked into Erilea. Now, she is given a chance to escape. The Crown Prince has came with an offer for her to have a chance at freedom. She must become the King’s champion. With the Captain of the Guard by her side, she strives to win the competition that will give her a shot at freedom.

Favorites

I love Celeana. She’s a bit of everything honestly. It’s a weird mix, but somehow it just works. She’s so interesting and I love her.
Also, the plot is extremely enthralling, to me at least. I’ve definitely been in a fantasy kick lately so this plot just really drew me in. It’s exciting, it’s mysterious, it has hints of magic/fantasy that seep in and makes it so so interesting.

I love Maas’ writing style. I find that anything that is written in 3rd POV can be awkward and choppy. However, Maas manages to fluently write with a 3rd POV and still make it possible so that the reader can feel the intimacy with the characters. I was able to understand the characters, their thought process etc. I do feel like the narration does place an emphasis on Celeana, given she is the main character.

I feel like the dynamics in the character relationships are very interesting as well. They feel very raw and real. I feel attached to the relationships in this novel and it kills me to not know what will happen next yet.

Not-so-faves

There wasn’t much about this book I didn’t like in particular. However, I felt like Celeana’s character was not at its full potential, given this is a series I do understand why.

Final Thoughts

This was such a fascinating read. My friend, Karmen, has been pushing me to read this for a little while now, and finally, I’ve decided to pick it up. It was just so interesting, I felt engorged into the world the novel was in.
However, it didn’t receive a 5/5 from me just because I really really liked it, almost even loved it. It just didn’t feel complete, there was just something missing I couldn’t describe. Maybe the need for a more solid back story… I’m not quite sure. It just wasn’t perfect for me, but very near it. (4.5/5) It is very common for me not to give 5 stars to first books in series because it takes a lot to wow me being only the first part of a story. — I tend to give stand alones 5 stars more often due to this reason. Don’t get me wrong, it was fascinating, enthralling, interesting. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I definitely can’t wait to read the rest of this series (or at least the books that have been published).

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a good fantasy kick with a fascinating main character.
